Metallica Concert - Allstate Arena
Saturday night we went to see Metallica at the Allstate Arena. This was an excellent show. I loved how the stage was set up. The stage was set in the middle of the arena and allowed the band to face any side of the arena at any time. The stage also rotated throughout the set, so that each side of the arena got to see the front of the stage at some point during the evening.
I think they played maybe three songs from the St. Anger album (a good thing since this is not one of my favorite Metallica albums) and included a lot of old material like Sad But True, Leper Messiah and, of course, Creeping Death. These are all great tunes to see live.
I haven’t actually seen them since they were an opening act for Ozzy during their Master of Puppets tour and to be honest there was a part of me that thought I was going to be disappointed. After all, it’s been a long time. I wasn’t disappointed in the least. Saturday night was the second show in Chicago, and for the show they actually mixed the set up a bit so that the people who were there Friday night — and there were quite a few people who did attend both nights — got a different show.
The other kind of cool thing about the show was the range of age groups that were there. The last time I was at a Metallica concert, there were mostly kids my age there (or maybe those are the only people I noticed). This time around, there were people of all ages, from 12-13 through people who looked way older than me.
One more thing. The opening band was Godsmack. I had bought one of their albums about a month ago to look cool for the kids, but hadn’t really listened to it. They put on a great show as well, so much so that I think Jonna and I are going to re-review the CD we bought. This band is pretty damn good live. Their show was quite entertaining, and I’m not usually a big one for opening bands (as a matter of fact, I didn’t even really care if we made it to the opening show when we started on our way to the concert - now I’m glad we did).
It’s been a pretty long time since I’ve seen a concert and this was a really good one to start up again. I had a blast.
