DVD: Dream On Seasons 1 & 2

Dream On - Seasons 1 & 2Quite a few months ago I had noticed that Dream On - Seasons 1 & 2 were available for purchase. Back when this show was on, I used to watch it periodically and really enjoyed it. Last weekend I broke down and picked it up and Jonna and I have been working our way through the episodes.

I had forgotten just how funny and entertaining this show was. I believe this was the first (or at least one of the first) HBO original comedies that had come out back in the 90’s that grew out of John Landis’ interest in creating a show around all of the old then unused TV footage that Universal Studios had in its libraries. He recruited David Crane and Marta Kauffman (who later went on to create a little TV show called ‘Friends’) as writers.

This adult oriented sitcom centers around, Martin Tupper, a recently divorced man book editor at a small boutique publishing firm and his foray back into the dating world. Martin spent a lot of time watching TV when he was a child, and throughout the episodes situations cause flashbacks to scenes from these old shows, which just makes the show that much funnier. Adding to the hilarity is Martins best friend, Eddie Charles, a exploitation-TV talk show host a la Geraldo, his assistant Toby, and the near perfect but never seen husband if his ex-wife, “Dr. Richard Stone”.

I’ve really found this show quite entertaining and still fresh after 16 years. Each episode is 30 minutes, so it doesn’t take a lot of time to blow through a disc.

If you’d like to spend some time watching a very entertaining and funny show, pick up this show at Amazon. I would be quite surprised if you were disappointed.

After the Snow Storm

The willow tree behind the Labs after the big snow storm Friday night. Jonna pointed it out and I thought it looked completely cool.

Explaining Source Control

So many things can have to be changed when switching hosting providers that sometimes code branching is the best answer (DUH). Here’s my feeble attempt at trying to explain the process during one such move. This actually went on for months, with me merging privately and creating builds for testing.

This was the final branching plan, once I knew everything would merge properly and I was asked to get everyone comfortable.

This is from sometime around 2002.

From the Bieber Labs archives … diagram compliments of Dia.

Books: Gods Debris by Scott Adams

God\'s Debris : A Thought Experiment Over a two week Christmas break, one of the books I picked up was God’s Debris : A Thought Experiment by Scott Adams. I had heard about it on the Daily Source Code where Adam Curry mentioned it extremely briefly, basically just saying that it was an interesting book and really made you think. Given that description, and the fact that the book was something that looked like something I could read in a couple of hours (which I did) I picked it up. I’ve been meaning to post something up about it ever since, so here it is.

I was expecting “Dilbert-like” humour through the book, but this is not a Dilbert book. Instead it is a metaphorical journey down the path of one mans enlightenment while performing his job delivering packages. As he is working he happens upon an old sage that he is delivering a package to who begins a conversation with him that lasts for hours over things like religion, philosophy, probability and the existence of free will.

The book reminded me a lot of one of my favorite books, The Adventures of Anybody by Richard Bandler, mainly due to the structure and the pretty deep and thought provoking subject matter. Its a really well written book that is a breeze to read through and really gets you thinking well after you’ve closed the book.

I found the writing style to be extremely engaging, and Scott presents the concepts covered in a very easy to understand way, through the eyes of someone being taught the concepts. Adams is also cautionary in the introduction, pointing out that the ideas in the book are not his, except “by coincedence in a few spots not worth mentioning”. He also points out that the book should not be read by those under 14, and those over 55 may not enjoy it because it introduces some new ideas. Some of these ideas are pretty bizarre, but extremely interesting to think about. Finally, it should be pointed out that he is not presenting any of the philosophical ideas as fact, but as a vehicle to get you thinking. For me at least, he succeeded.

This book is quite a departure for the man that gave us Dilbert, but its a welcome departure. I really enjoyed the journey presented in the book and would encourage you to pick up the book and give it a read. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, as long as you don’t take what is said too seriously and take it for what it is.

Food for thought.

Sirius Radio Podshow Audio Quality

Jonna bought me a Sirius Satellite Radio setup for the car for Christmas in preparation for the Howard Stern move. One of the stations that I listen to is Sirius Stars 103, for the Adam Curry Podshow. One thing I noticed was that this channel sounded very much like AM radio. I had mentioned this to Jonna when I first set it up, but thought it was just me.

Well, on today’s Daily Source Code (#316) someone actually asked the question about the sound quality and Adam explained it. It actually is lower quality. It’s not my brain playing tricks on me.

This aside though, the first two weeks of satellite radio has been cool. I like being able to pay for unedited and uncensored content and while there are commercials, it is nothing like terrestrial radio. No 20 minute commercial breaks. I’m really liking it - aside from the three or four spots on the way to work where the signal dies and I get the “aquiring signal” message …

One final thing, Sirius 103 is the only channel I’ve had this quality of sound with. Everything else sounds great.
